Live market gold prices are a guide only and are not the same as the amount you will receive when selling gold jewellery.

Gold Price Per Gram in Australia

The live gold price gives you a useful picture of what gold is trading for today, but it doesn’t tell you exactly what your jewellery is worth. When you’re selling gold jewellery, the value of your pieces will also depend on their gold purity and weight. A 9ct ring, for example, contains a different amount of pure gold than an 18ct ring of the same weight. Explore our Gold Karat Guide below:

  • Spot Price vs What Your Gold Jewellery Is Worth

This is an important distinction. The spot price is essentially the current market price of pure gold.

Your old jewellery is different. A 9ct ring is only 37.5% pure gold. An 18ct chain is 75%. Jewellery can also contain gemstones, clasps and other materials that aren't gold.

So seeing a live gold price of $X per gram doesn't automatically mean every gram of your jewellery is worth that amount.

GOLD PURITY - Is your jewellery 9ct, 14ct, 18ct, 22ct or another purity?

GOLD WEIGHT- How much relevant gold content is actually present?

CURRENT GOLD PRICE- What is the gold price when your pieces are being valued?

This gives you a much clearer picture than relying on a generic online gold calculator alone.

Live Australian Gold Price FAQs

Why Does the Australian Gold Price Change?

Gold is traded globally, which means its price is constantly moving.

The Australian gold price is influenced by both the international gold price and the value of the Australian dollar.

Changes in global markets, investor demand, interest rates, economic conditions and currency movements can all influence the price.

That's why the value you see today may be different tomorrow.

For someone considering selling old jewellery, you don't need to follow every market movement. Checking today's gold price simply gives you useful context for what your gold may be worth.

How much is 1 gram of gold worth in Australia today?

The value of one gram of gold depends on its purity. 24ct gold contains approximately 99.9% pure gold, while 18ct contains 75% and 9ct contains 37.5%. Check our live price table above for the latest indicative Australian gold price per gram.

Is the live gold price the amount I'll receive for my jewellery?

No. The live or spot gold price is a market reference, not automatically the amount a gold buyer will offer for jewellery. Your valuation will depend on factors including gold purity, relevant gold weight and the buyer's purchasing rate.

What does spot gold price mean?

The spot price refers to the current market price of gold for immediate settlement. It is generally quoted internationally per troy ounce and can then be converted into Australian dollars and a per-gram value.

Why does the gold price change every day?

Gold trades on international markets, so its price moves in response to factors including global demand, currencies, interest rates and economic conditions. The AUD/USD exchange rate also influences the Australian dollar gold price.

Is 18ct gold worth more than 9ct gold?

Gram for gram of equivalent relevant gold weight, 18ct gold contains more pure gold than 9ct. 18ct is 75% pure gold compared with 37.5% for 9ct.

How can I find out exactly what my gold is worth?

A live gold price can give you a useful starting point. For an actual valuation, your jewellery needs to be assessed for purity and gold weight. Gold Buyers Online professionally tests and weighs your pieces before providing an offer.

How Do I Know What Karat My Gold Is?

Start with the stamp. Take a close look inside rings, around clasps and on the back of pendants.

You may find:

375 → 9ct

585 → 14ct

750 → 18ct

916 → 22ct

999 → 24ct

Can't find one? That's okay.

Older jewellery, worn pieces and some imported jewellery may have markings that are difficult to find or read. And a stamp alone isn't a substitute for professional testing.

How Much Is 9ct Gold Worth Per Gram in Australia?

This is particularly relevant if you're sorting through an Australian jewellery box. 9ct gold contains 37.5% pure gold and is commonly stamped 375.

Because 9ct jewellery isn't pure gold, you can't simply weigh a 9ct ring and multiply that weight by the 24ct gold price.

The gold first needs to be identified and professionally tested so its actual gold content can be taken into account.

How Much Is 18ct Gold Worth Per Gram in Australia?

18ct gold contains 75% pure gold and is commonly marked 750.

That means an 18ct piece contains twice the proportion of pure gold found in a 9ct piece.

So imagine you have two chains that each contain the same relevant gold weight:

9ct chain → 37.5% gold

18ct chain → 75% gold

The 18ct piece contains considerably more pure gold.
