Lost Gold: The Treasure We Still Dream About.

From legendary shipwrecks to the hidden gold waiting to be discovered.

For as long as gold has existed, people have searched for it.

Across oceans. Through deserts. Deep underground.

Empires were built in pursuit of it. Expeditions were launched to recover it. Entire towns sprang up around the hope of discovering just one nugget.

Centuries later, that fascination hasn't disappeared.

From legendary shipwrecks resting on the ocean floor to weekend prospectors exploring Australia's historic goldfields, the search for gold continues to capture our imagination.

History's Greatest Lost Treasures

Some of history's greatest fortunes remain hidden, waiting to be rediscovered.

The San José Galleon

Often described as one of the world's richest shipwrecks, the Spanish galleon sank off the coast of Colombia in 1708 carrying an enormous cargo of gold, silver and emeralds. More than three centuries later, the treasure remains the subject of international legal disputes and continues to capture the imagination of treasure hunters around the world.

The Flor de la Mar

Lost in 1511 while transporting treasure from the Portuguese conquest of Malacca, the Flor de la Mar has never been conclusively recovered. Its disappearance remains one of maritime history's greatest mysteries.

The Merchant Royal

Nicknamed The El Dorado of the Seas, the Merchant Royal sank off the coast of England in 1641 carrying gold, silver and valuable coins. Historians believe the cargo could now be worth hundreds of millions of dollars, yet the ship has never been found.

The Treasure Hunt Continues

While legendary shipwrecks continue to fascinate historians, thousands of people still search for gold every weekend.

Across Australia, hobby prospectors head into forests, rivers and former goldfields armed with little more than a metal detector, a gold pan and a sense of adventure.

For many, the reward isn't simply finding gold. It's the excitement of uncovering a piece of history.

Where Could You Discover Gold?

Gold isn't only found in remote landscapes or beneath the ocean. Modern treasure hunters search in all kinds of places, each offering the possibility of uncovering something unexpected.

Historic Goldfields

Australia's gold rush may have peaked more than 170 years ago, but many historic goldfields continue to attract recreational prospectors today.

Popular regions include:

  • Ballarat, Victoria
  • Bendigo, Victoria
  • Castlemaine, Victoria
  • Maryborough, Victoria
  • Dunolly, Victoria
  • Hill End, New South Wales
  • Bathurst, New South Wales
  • Kalgoorlie, Western Australia

If you're planning to prospect on public land, remember to check your state's licensing requirements and local regulations before heading out.

Beaches

Every year, thousands of rings, necklaces, bracelets and coins are accidentally lost along Australia's coastline.

Many hobby detectorists head out after busy weekends or holiday periods, searching beneath the sand for jewellery that has slipped unnoticed from fingers, pockets or beach bags.

Parks & Picnic Areas

Public parks, sporting grounds and picnic areas can also reveal lost coins, jewellery and historic relics.

Before using a metal detector, always check local council regulations, as rules vary between locations.

Campsites & Historic Recreation Areas

Older campsites, showgrounds and recreation reserves can offer glimpses into the past, with detectorists occasionally uncovering old coins, buckles, buttons and other forgotten items.

Around Home

Sometimes the easiest place to begin is much closer than you think. A jewellery box tucked away in a drawer. A broken chain waiting to be repaired. A single earring without its pair. Inherited jewellery no longer worn.

Some of the most overlooked gold isn't buried beneath the earth or hidden beneath the sea. It's already sitting at home!
